Sportswear Fabrics Explained

The best sportswear fabrics are moisture wicking polyester for tops and jerseys, micro mesh for airflow, spandex blends for stretch and compression, and brushed fleece or French terry for warm up wear. The right choice depends on the sport, the climate and how the garment will be decorated.

Moisture wicking polyester

Polyester is the base of most teamwear and training tops. It moves sweat away from the skin, dries quickly and takes sublimation printing very well.

Micro mesh and pique mesh

Mesh fabrics have small holes or a textured knit that increase airflow. They are used for jersey panels, side inserts and hot weather kits.

Spandex and Lycra blends

Adding spandex gives four way stretch. It is used in leggings, compression tops, rash guards and fitted shorts for freedom of movement.

French terry and brushed fleece

These softer, warmer fabrics suit hoodies, sweatpants, joggers and tracksuits. French terry is lighter, while brushed fleece is warmer.

Choosing a fabric for your product

  • Match jerseys: polyester with mesh panels
  • Compression and base layers: polyester spandex blend
  • Warm up jackets: smooth knit polyester or fleece
  • Everyday joggers: French terry or cotton blend

Fabric and decoration

Sublimation works on polyester, not on cotton. If you want an all over print, choose a polyester based fabric.
